Credit Card Processing Review
What you need to know about Ecommerce
Thinking about selling products online? Watch our video to learn about setting up an ecommerce solution.
Understanding credit card processing can be difficult. To get what your business needs out of a credit card processing service you should know your way around the main ideas and aspects that will affect your account with the credit card processor. So we're here to help you understand it. When you sign up with a credit card processing service you will set up a Merchant Account. Credit card processors allow a business to accept credit cards as payment for goods and services. In a way, merchant accounts act as a contract between you, the business owner, and the bank. The money you receive from customers is deposited into your merchant account. As always it’s important to get to know the credit card processor before signing with them. For example, you’ll want to know who the underwriter is for the independent service organizer and which banks they have relationships with. An Independent service organizer or ISO for short, are like middle men because they typically don’t perform the services sold. ISO’s represent a bank and processor alliance. The ISO has an agreement to sell the services of the bank, processor alliance, and is allowed to mark up the fees and sign up merchants. Basically, ISOs accept your applications and then they send it to the underwriter to be approved. An underwriter approves or denies your application. Underwriters evaluate the risks, associated with allowing a merchant to accept credit cards. They go through a detailed analysis of the applicant’s credit history and the business’ previous processing history if applicable. Banks want to make sure that applicants are responsible entities, because, in effect, a merchant account processing service is a form of credit. Underwriters backup your merchant account, while the ISO’s don’t accept the responsibility. It’s great to find an ISO that is also the underwriter. This is the best option because the ISO is taking responsibility for the business, not just pawning it off for someone else to take responsibility. When the ISO is also the underwriter it evaluates the future success and risk of the merchant account applicant and approves or denies an account. If the merchant violates the terms of the merchant account agreement, the ISO underwriter team will shut down the credit card processing account. The underwriter approves or denies your application. Credit card processors may require you to setup a reserve account. A reserve account protects the processor in case your business has any future losses. You as a business or merchant must maintain a reserve account at the processors bank. This allows the processor to issue a hold on funds in the reserve account in case of fraud, refunds, chargebacks, or large number of returns. The amount of the money and how long it has to stay in the reserve account depends on the processor. Processors will decide the details on your reserve account by how risky they perceive your business. Risky businesses will have to put more money in the reserve for a longer amount of time before the money gets returned to you.
